What is figure drawing? Where do I start? What's the correct way to draw the figure? All these answers and more in the videos to come!
1. Watch the video to the left, then find a picture of an athlete, dancer, etc(full body), drag to your desktop and keep it. Then draw it using whatever principles make the most sense to you. Choices would be gestural, lines, or envelope.
|
2. Watch the first two videos below. Then open the file below, and using your finger, trace the gestural lines on the figures. Take your time and notice any subtle curves or arches.

3. Start with video 3 & 4 below. Using the techniques in video 4, refer back to your image you chose for step 1. Try drawing the gestural skeleton using the methods demonstrated in video 4.
4. Watch the 5th video below about drawing the ribcage. On a new piece of paper attempt to draw the ribcage of the person from your photo. Try it multiple times, until it becomes easier to identify the correct angles and proportions.
5. Watch the 6th video. It describes how to identify and draw the pelvis area within the figure. After watching the video revisit your original, and begin a new stick figure, head and ribcage included, and now adding the pelvis as demonstrated in the video. If time allows, repeat the process again for repetition and practice. Repeat at least 5 times on a single piece of paper.
6. Watch the 7th video. It goes into detail how to measure the proportions of the figure. Once you've watched the video, find a new reference photo, and draw it using the measurements described in the video.
7. Open the first "Guided Timed Drawings-Non-Nude"
Follow the video, and complete the drawings with the allotted time. Keep the last 10 minute drawing in your tote tray. Label it "1st 10-minute Drawing."
Follow the video, and complete the drawings with the allotted time. Keep the last 10 minute drawing in your tote tray. Label it "1st 10-minute Drawing."
8. You'll need several pieces of newsprint again. Watch the 8th video below, which discusses how to draw the figure from the side and back. Once finished with the video begin the second video of the "Guided Timed Drawings-Non-Nude." Keep the last 10 minute drawing in your tote tray. Label it "2nd 10 minute drawing."
9. Watch the 9th video below. It discusses outlines, and tonal value of those lines, to start creating more detail of the figure. Once finished with the video continue with the 3rd "Guided Timed Drawings-Non-Nude." Start the video at 15:09, which is a 5-minute pose. Try to start using the techniques of adding outlines and details to the figure. Continue with the video, and save the 10-minute drawing. Label it "3rd 10-minute drawing," and turn in with drawings 1 and 2.
10. Watch the 10th video below. It discuss more techniques and exercises on how to add outlines and tones to your figure drawings. Once finished with the video continue with the 4th "Guided Timed Drawings-Non-Nude." Save the 10-minute drawing in your tote tray, and recycle the others.
11. You can watch the 11th video below, which is just a recap of the drawing techniques already mentioned, or, you can move ahead with the next "Guided Timed Drawings-Non-Nude." We will be starting with the 5th video from this series. Keep the 10 minute drawing in your tote tray.
12. Start with the 6th "Guided Timed Drawings-Non-Nude." You will have extra time in the class period. Once you get to the 10 minute drawing, pause the video and finish the drawing with the extra time. It will end up being about a 20 minute drawing, so try to start adding more and more detail. Do the shorter drawings on newsprint, but complete the 10 minute drawing on small drawing paper.
13. First, watch the 3 videos in the foreshortening series. The third video describes an exercise to improve your skills with foreshortening. You don't need to single-handedly practice this technique, but try it as you complete your 10 minute drawing. With that said, move on to follow the 7th "Guided Timed Drawings-Non-Nude." Instead of using your pencil, you'll be using charcoal as a drawing medium. This time, move forward to the 10 minute drawing pose, and pause the video. Use all of class on the 10 minute drawing. Remember to apply the techniques for applying foreshortening to your drawing.
14. Move directly to the 8th "Guided Timed Drawings-Non-Nude" video. Using charcoal and newsprint, do all of the shorter drawings and the 10-minute drawing. You will have extra time remaining; use it on the 10 minute drawing. Remember to account for foreshortening. Use techniques such as sketching guide-lines, drawing the big shapes, identifying negative space, and if you're still stuck measure. Save the last drawing to turn in.
15. You'll need several pieces of newsprint, and a piece of charcoal. Go to the 9th "Guided Timed Drawings-Non-Nude" video. Complete the shorter drawings, and the 10-minute drawing. You can draw on the front and the back. Save ALL drawings, stapling your 10-minute drawing to the top. You should have 12 shorter drawings, and the final 10-minute, for a total of 13 drawings. Once again, you will have extra time remaining in class; use that time for the 10 minute drawing. At the end of the period put your stapled drawings in your tote tray.
16. You'll need several pieces of newsprint, and a piece of charcoal. Go to the 10th "Guided Timed Drawings-Non-Nude" video.
