Welcome Back!
Throughout the next two semesters we will revisit color theory, the use of shapes and forms, and value. Along with reviewing the aforementioned, we'll start looking at what it takes to create effective designs. We will systematically attack the principles of design, gaining a better understanding as to how each principle can strengthen your personal work.
This class will be different from your first two years of art in that we will learn how to become better artists from a technical standpoint. One example, instead of simply painting a whale in the center of a canvas we will juxtapose (what's juxtapose ?) the whale off to one side, creating balance with "off-balance." This will all make more sense as we progress.
In addition we will begin to examine how art has evolved beginning with the Renaissance and working our way to modern art.

Not only in graphic design, but in all of art, artists are presented with the problem to create emphasis on a specific area of their work. Emphasis, one of the principles of design, helps draw the viewer's eyes in, focussing the viewer on what the artist has intended; creating a focal point. During the renaissance artists began using perspective to create depth, which emphasized certain aspects of their work. Take a look at The Last Supper by da Vinci. Notice how the two side walls angle back in one-point perspective, creating emphasis on Jesus.
